How do Momentum OW Mallorca training sessions work and what role do they play in your “Momentums”?

Much more than a sun and beach holiday
Momentum OW Mallorca is not just a sea voyage and a few days on the island; it is a journey that begins weeks earlier, in the pool.

The training programs we offer between July and August are designed to ensure you arrive in September with the perfect blend of endurance, technique, and confidence, so you can enjoy every meter instead of suffering through it.
When you decide to come to Momentum, you're not just booking a vacation: you're committing to a process that transforms the sea into familiar territory and your body into your best ally.
Why we train before Momentum OW Mallorca
Train to enjoy, not just to endure
Our goal is not for you to "survive" the journey, but to experience it with calm, safety, and excitement.
That's why we've designed a 10-week plan that accompanies you from your first meters in the pool until the day you enter the water in Mallorca with the feeling of "I've already worked on this"
How is the training plan organized?
Three blocks, one single goal: to arrive fit and eager
The Momentum OW Mallorca plan is divided into 10 weeks and 3 main blocks, with about 3 swimming sessions per week as an ideal reference.
Block 1 – Accumulation and efficiency
In the first few weeks we build your aerobic base in Z2 and work on the efficiency of your swimming.
You will learn to accumulate meters with good technique, to maintain a comfortable cruising pace and gradually introduce open water swimming techniques (orientation, changes of pace, swimming with your head out of the water).
Block 2 – Capacity and rhythm
In the second block we play with higher rhythms: we work in Z3, introduce changes of rhythm Z2–Z3–Z4 and get you used to the feeling of sustained effort with fatigue.
This is where you start to notice clear changes in your fitness: more sustainable speed, better tolerance for fatigue, and a different kind of confidence when you see a "long" session coming up in the plan.
Block 3 – Tuning and unloading
The last few weeks are not about doing more, but about doing better.
We reduce the distance, maintain some intensity levels, and give your body time to assimilate all the previous work.
The goal is for you to arrive in Mallorca rested, feeling light, eager for the sea and with the certainty that you have done what was necessary to enjoy the experience.
How we measure effort: the RPE scale
That everyone speaks the same language.
To ensure that any swimmer can follow the plan, regardless of their pace, we use a Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale from 1 to 10:
Z1 – Smooth / Recovery (RPE 3–4): very comfortable pace, you can hold a conversation.
Z2 – Cruising pace (RPE 5–6): your long pace in open water, sustainable for a long time.
Z3 – Threshold pace (RPE 7–8): strong and cheerful effort, accelerated breathing, typical of short competition.
Z4 – Speed / sprint (RPE 9–10): maximum effort, only sustainable for a few meters.
Each session of the plan indicates which zone you should be in (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4) so you can adjust your pace intuitively, without needing to know your heart rate data or exact training zones.
What role do workouts play in your "vacation"?
The journey begins when you enter the pool
Physically, the training prepares you to complete the journey with a sense of control: arriving at the sea knowing that your body has already covered meters in Zone 2, tested series in Zone 3, and managed fatigue in the pool.
Mentally, they reduce the fear of the unknown: when you have practiced orientation, head out of the water, changes of pace and swimming in different zones, on the day of Momentum OW Mallorca your brain recognizes the script.
And experientially, they turn the holidays into something more: it's not just "arriving on the island and swimming", it's celebrating a whole preparation process that you have lived week by week.
Each session you complete in July and August is a small investment in how you will feel in September when you look at the horizon and know that the sea is meant to be enjoyed.
How to use the blog and the Momentum plan
Your guide to follow block by block
On the Momentum blog you will find detailed articles by block and week:
A general article (this one) where we explain the meaning of the plan and its relationship to the OW Mallorca experience.
An article for Block 1, with the accumulation and efficiency weeks, its session tables and explanations.
An article for Block 2, focused on capacity and rhythm, with more demanding training and mental work on fatigue.
An article for Block 3, where we fine-tune and accompany you in the final stretch before traveling to the island.
We recommend you start by reading this guide to understand the "why" of each phase, and from there continue block by block, adapting volumes and rhythms according to your level and your schedule.
